What to Do if You Spill a Drink on Your Laptop

Spilling a drink on your laptop can be a very serious problem. But, depending on what you do, and how fast you react, you can potentially save a lot by minimizing the damage a spill can have on your laptop.

What to do in the event of a spill:

Turn off your laptop. If you have your laptop powered on when the spill happens, shut it down as fast as possible. Usually holding the power button down for 10 seconds will be your fastest option to turning off your laptop

Remove the battery. After your laptop has been shut down, remove the battery pack. This will keep your laptop from accidentally being powered back up and removes any way that power can still be going to the motherboard (example hibernation or standby mode).

Leave it opened and turned upside down to dry out. Let gravity be your friend and try to keep the liquid from drying on your components.

Get it repaired and cleaned quickly. Depending on what was spilled on your laptop, the liquid may be corrosive, like cola and can still be doing damage to your laptop. The best defense is sending your laptop in for repair as soon as you can. The quicker you get you laptop into the hands of a professional, the better chance you have of minimizing the damage.

Description of Malware

Malware, a generic name for all types of malicious programs: adware, backdoors, rogues, Trojans, viruses and worms.

Adware (or spyware) is a small program that is designed to show advertisements (in various form and degrees of intrusiveness) on your computer. It often reports personal information back to its owners. As a result your sense of privacy can be violated.

Backdoor. A backdoor is a small malicious program that is used to gain access to a computer by bypassing the computer access security mechanisms. It gives the attacker almost unlimited rights. While it can be used to spy on a user, it is mainly used to install other malware on the system.

Rogue. A rogue program is a malicious program that is disguised, for instance, as trustworthy anti-spyware programs or registry cleaners. But these programs are only put on the market to scare you into buying these programs because they make exaggerated claims about the safety of your computer or, worse still, give erroneous scan results or put their own malware in your system.

Trojan. A Trojan (or Trojan horse) is a small malicious program that pretends to have a particular function, but that only shows its real purpose after execution and that purpose is often destructive. Trojans cannot multiply themselves, which differentiates them from viruses and worms.

Virus. A virus is a small malicious program that multiplies and is capable to attach itself to other programs after being executed. It then causes an infection and causes various degrees of damage to your computer.

Worm. A worm is often characterized as a malicious application that will use a host machine to infect other machines. Therefore worms can create enormous damage on networks with multiple computers.

Laptop won't charge anymore? Still works on battery?
 From $85
Symptoms
Move the power plug and the laptop loses connection.

 Broken or cracked DC jack.
Laptop won't charge but worked on battery.
Power LED and battery LED flicker when the adapter tip is moved.
 Battery won't charge.
Sparks come out the back of the laptop.
Why does this happen?
 Flaw in manufacturer designs.
Use of universal or non-original AC adapter.
Lots of plugging and unplugging of the AC adapter.
Tripping on or pulling the AC adapter cord.

Laptop LCD Screen Replacement

Are you having problems with the screen or LCD on your laptop?
 Starting at $65
If you've dropped your notebook or dropped something on it and the screen has fractured, the diagnosis is easy. Just connect an external monitor to your notebook via its VGA-out port to verify that the notebook's other components still work. If the laptop functions properly in all other respects, then it's just a mater of replacing the LCD. Give us a call, our techs have performed this type of replacement hundreds of times.
If your display problems aren't the result of visible physical damage, however, the problem may not be the LCD. If your screen's backlight flickers, shuts down after a few minutes of usage, or doesn't come on at all, but you can still see a faint screen image, your problem may be the inverter, a small board that supplies power to the backlight. The good news is that these boards are available for well under $30. If replacing the inverter doesn't solve the problem, the backlight itself may be faulty. If that's the case, replacing the LCD should fix your problem.
If you see gibberish, lines, or a solid color on the screen, connect an external monitor and switch to that display (if you can). If the problem is evident on the external monitor, the issue is likely with your laptop's motherboard or video circuitry, not the display. If the external display works properly, the LCD or the cables leading to it are the likely problem.
In any case, call us we can properly diagnose and repair any problem you may be experiencing with your notebook's display.
